History of the Northcote Town Centre

The 1956 Northcote Borough Act allowed Council to sell the lots to any person who wished to build for commercial purposes. The Northcote Borough chose not to sell the freehold land, so as to ensure Council’s adequate control over the development.

Northcote Plan 1958, Original Design Plans

The official opening of the Centre was held on Friday 19 June 1959. The buildings and activities built at that time included a drapery, a food market, a green grocery, a hairdressers, doctors and dentists rooms and a post office.

Northcote was one of the earliest pedestrian malls built in New Zealand.

The new Town Centre was to be the first municipally-owned shopping mall in New Zealand.

Food Hygiene Course

Northcote Mainstreet has worked hard on having outstanding food hygiene standards in the Northcote Town Centre. Most businesses in the centre now have an A or B food hygiene rating.

A food hygiene course was run in the Centre with outstanding results being achieved. Four Northcote business-people achieved over 95% in the course exam which is outstanding.

Real Art Roadshow

The ‘Real Art Roadshow’ came to Northcote in July. This mobile art collection has been touring the country, and received an excellent response in Northcote. It was a good attraction in the last school holidays, and we will continue to work to get future roadshows into the Northcote Town Centre.

Northcote’s Chinese & Korean New Year Festival is a free community event of colour, culture and cuisine.  It features an array of cultural performances including traditional dance, taiko drumming, spectacular martial arts and singing.

The event also features authentic Asian food stalls, an art exhibition, a host of free children’s entertainment, and special activities such as traditional Chinese fortune telling.

Northcote

A successful Northcote Fiesta was staged in the centre on Saturday, 1 November.  There were good crowds of people in the centre enjoying the entertainment from various cultural groups and local schools, and the fund-raising stalls organised by the Rotary Club of Northcote.  The Northcote Fiesta, proved to be a great occasion for the Northcote Shopping Centre, and community in general, as can be seen from these images.

North Shore City Beijing Olympics
The recent “North Shore City Beijing Olympics Live” was a tremendous success in terms of the diverse crowds that it drew in, entertainment it provided and media coverage it attracted.
Key to the success of the “live site” were the various special events held in the Northcote Shopping Centre each weekend.  The Opening Event in particular attracted several thousand people, and provided a great start to the promotion.

An estimated audience of 70,000 attended the “live site” during its 16 day duration.  The audience was varied, with people from all ages, from various parts of the North Shore and the wider Auckland region coming into the centre for the coverage and associated events.

One of the highlights of the promotion was seeing a large crowd of people from diverse backgrounds in the Northcote Shopping Centre from 12midnight – 4am watching the ‘Opening Ceremony’ live from Beijing.

The promotion garnered a significant amount of media coverage including “live crosses” on Breakfast and the TV3 News, a feature story on the TV One News, and a feature on Asia Downunder.
“North Shore City Beijing Olympics Live” was certainly a large undertaking and could not have been done without the financial support of North Shore City Council and The Lion Foundation.

We had visits from representatives from both Auckland and Manukau City Councils during “North Shore City Beijing Olympics Live,”complimenting Northcote Mainstreet on the professionalism of the set-up, and the ideal location that the Northcote Shopping Centre provided for a “live site”.

This newsletter features some photographs from the “live site” and some of the media coverage from the promotion.

We can now look forward to a summer of entertainment and events in the Centre, starting with the Northcote Fiesta on Saturday, 1 November.
